Friends

When you see who still stands behind you after a wrongful conviction, you will see who is your true friend. To them you're not "some guy who used to be my friend". You're simply, "my friend". The others were never really your friends anyway.

So Many Visitors

The police estimate that Yvonne Layne was murdered at 10:00 pm. They give no reason for giving this time and it is not related to the coroner's findings. Three men admit in statements that they individually visited Yvonne at or near the time of her death on March 31st, 1999, the first being seen in the victim's driveway with her at 7:30 p.m. They all deny involvement in her death. Either one of them is lying and they actually committed the murder, or including the murderer, 4 different people stopped by the victim's house at approximately the same time, none bumping into the others.

The Other Door

With this side door that opened into the victim's back yard operational and away from the bloody crime area, the detectives and the chief of police decided it made more sense to them to take a blanket from the victim's bed, cover her body with it, and walk her children over top of her to the front door to exit the house. The man exiting the crime scene the next morning and seen by an eyewitness made the same decision. He walked right out the front door, barely six feet from the sidewalk and straight into an eyewitness. The eyewitness, his selection of a suspect and his statement were then kept from the defense by the police department and the prosecution.

Locard's Principle on evidence

Wherever he steps, whatever he touches, whatever he leaves, even unconsciously, will serve as a silent witness against him. Not only his fingerprints or his footprints, but his hair, the fibers from his clothes, the glass he breaks, the tool mark he leaves, the paint he scratches, the blood or semen he deposits or collects. All of these and more, bear mute witness against him. This is evidence that does not forget. It is not confused by the excitement of the moment. It is not absent because human witnesses are. It is factual evidence. Physical evidence cannot be wrong, it cannot perjure itself, it cannot be wholly absent. Only human failure to find it, study and understand it, can diminish its value." - Locard's Principle

Judge Richard Reinbold (Trial judge for David Thorne)

Judge Richard Reinbold  (Trial judge for David Thorne): "But if I am correct in my characterization of trial counsel's strategy, it would have been counterproductive to bring in such expert (forensic) testimony. In other words, if trial counsel chose the other path, who cares about the blood splatter, who cares about blood stains on couch pillow cases, and who cares about bloody footprints."
WHO CARES? I do. Anyone who cares about justice should. The trial judge CERTAINLY should.
